Recent Projects

Ithaka Institute for Climate Farming has been working to demonstrate practical approaches that connect climate action, ecological restoration, soil health, biodiversity and community livelihoods. Through projects in different parts of Nepal, the Institute explores how farmers and local communities can restore degraded land, improve agricultural productivity and build more resilient farming systems while contributing to climate mitigation.

Recent work includes the Bandipur Hill Reforestation Project, which focuses on restoring degraded hillsides through tree planting, natural regeneration, soil and water conservation, and community participation. In Ratanpur, Ithaka is developing a carbon farm that combines agroforestry, coffee and other crops with soil restoration and biodiversity enhancement, turning previously underutilized land into a productive and ecologically diverse farming landscape. The Dhading C-Sink Project works with farming communities to produce and apply biochar and improve soil fertility while creating an opportunity for farmers to benefit economically from carbon finance and carbon credits. Ithaka has also piloted TLUD (Top-Lit Up-Draft) stoves, enabling households to produce biochar while improving biomass cooking practices and creating a pathway for carbon removal.

Together, these projects reflect Ithaka's broader approach: working with communities to turn climate solutions into practical farming and land-restoration practices that provide environmental as well as livelihood benefits. Click on the respective project links on the side for further details.
